Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month in Pennsylvania

On May Second, House Resolution 269, as introduced by Speaker of the House John Perzel, designated May 2005 as Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

Thank you to the members of our group who suspended their daily activities on May 2nd to attend the rally at the capitol announcing Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month. We were honored to have Dr. Harold Harvey and Dr. Darrell Kirch, both of Hershey Medical Center, and Speaker John Perzel speak at the rally. Dr. Harvey continues to prove that he is a strong advocate of carcinoid cancer patients in Pennsylvania.

We were also honored to hear from our group members Loren Sweigard and Gloria Smith who spoke of their journey with carcinoid and LeRoy Petershiem who told of his wife Betty’s battle with carcinoid that lead to her death in 2004. Our group members were effective in portraying the importance of bringing early diagnosis, appropriately aggressive treatment, and better monitoring of carcinoid cancer.

I left the carcinoid awarness rally at the state capitol with an optimistic feeling that we, as a small group, can make a big difference in the lives of many carcinoid patients across the state and even further. Besides the rally, we have had newpaper coverage and the rally was broadcast across the state on the Pennsylvania Cable Network. Now we hear Dr. Wanda Filer will cover carcinoid on her WGAL TV medical news spot. A lot of diseases such as diabetes, heart conditions, and breast cancer have big champions in celebrities and corporate sponsors and do a good job of getting the message out about those diseases. God bless them. They deserve every dime spent and every message published or broadcast. You can be sure that patients and doctors alike are more aware of those diseases and that can only lead to better care for those patients and more research dollars. We carcinoids are part of a large group of patients who have rare diseases that do not get publicity. We all know that many doctors are unfamiliar with our disease and how to treat it. Many of us have had to blaze a trail of our own to get the care we need.We can do a lot to make the path easier for others.
As part of May awareness activities, I emailed a short message to all my family and friends on line and told them briefly about the event and gave them some basic information about carcinoid cancer. I was surprised at the reaction. Several wrote back to tell me they had e-mailed my message on to all their family and friends and so my small effort reached quite a few people across the nation. I would encourage you all to do the same and follow Teresa's request to write a letter to the editor of your local paper about May being carcinoid cancer awareness month.
Many thanks to Teresa for all her hard efforts and to Dr. Harold Harvey who is indeed "a champion of our cause".
